Elsie Barnes, 89, of Palestine, Texas, formerly of Deadwood, Texas, passed away on Sunday evening, February 18, 2024, in Palestine. Elsie Mae Johnson was born on April 18, 1934, in Panola County, Texas to the late Ruie Lee and Thelma Blanche Powell Johnson. She graduated from Longstreet, Louisiana High School with the Class of 1951. Elsie earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Spanish and Art at the University of Texas in Tyler in 1980. She taught elementary education at Whitehouse ISD for ten years, then later taught at the Texas Department of Justice for over six years. She married Charles William Barnes on March 5, 2000, in Neches, Texas. She was also preceded in death by a son, Howard Wade Cagle; grandson, Dylan Gregory Cagle; daughter, Wanda Sue Cagle; and sister, Jane Soape.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Barnes; sons, Howard Randal Cagle and Howard Gregory Cagle and wife Ricki; grandchildren, Seth Cagle, Caleb Cagle, Amanda Dillon, Alena Cagle, and Hanna Cagle; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; sister, Molly Bradford; one niece; and three nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Terry Evans and Greg Cagle officiating. Interment will follow in Panola Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Anthony Adkins, Caleb Cagle, Seth Cagle, Mario Hinojosa, Andrew Charbonneau, and Evan Charbonneau.
