Obituary

Funeral Services for Mr. Elbert Lee Reed, age 67 years of Beckville, Texas will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the Antioch Baptist Church in Clarksville, Texas with Rev. Romeo Crowley of the Community of Faith Church, Houston, Texas officiating. The burial will be in Reed Cemetery in Red River County, near Clarksville, Texas. Mr. Reed will have a visitation at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home on Tuesday evening July 18, 2006 from 5 to 7 P.M. with a wake at Brownrigg Funeral Home in Clarksville, Texas on Wednesday night, July 19, 2006 from 6 to 8 P.M. Mr. Reed died Monday, July 17, 2006 in Longview, Texas.
Mr. Reed was born in Reed's Settlement in Red River County on July 19, 1938. He was the son of Hermon Reed, Sr. and Valaska Campbell Reed. Mr. Reed graduated high school in Amarillo, Texas and graduated College at Texas College in Tyler, Texas later receiving his master's Degree. He retired from Chevron Oil Company with 39 years of service. Mr. Reed had lived in Panola County since 2001, moving here from San Jose, CA. Mr. Reed attended Bethel CME Church in Beckville. Mr. Reed was a leader in agricultural production, both livestock and hay. He should also be remembered as a man who loved life, friends, family, land and livestock, especially Piedmontese cows. He was a great supporter of Panola County and helped several of the community members, leagues, and associations. He was a member of the Panola County Landowner's Association. He was active in U.S.A. Track and Field, member of the Panola County Rodeo Assoc., an umpire with Dixie League in our region, active in Panola County Girls softball, a high school referee for our district in high School football and was 2005 King of the Carthage Courtesy Club and Radio Spokesperson for the Courtesy Club Juneteenth celebration. He was the 2005 Black History Honoree for the Black Businessman Association. Mr. Reed supported the Boys & Girls program in Carthage and taught school in the Mineola School District before retiring. Mr. Reed was a life member of Kappa Alpa Psi Faternity and Texas College Alumni Assoc., and also a member of the Amnesty International.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charlie Reed.
Mr. Reed is survived by two daughters, Shari Reed Hart and husband, Michael of Humble, Texas and Virginia Calsadillas of Salem, Orgeon; brother, Hermon Reed, Jr. and wife Shirley of Carthage; sister, Gloria Ecker and husband Lloyd of Houston , five grandchildren, Monique, Leticia, Raquel, David and Juan; three great grandchildren, Dacuan, Keshaun, Jaiceon and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Panola County Ag. Booster Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 113, Carthage, TX 75633 and/or the Panola County Girls Softball League, 1 Ball Park Drive, Carthage, TX 75633.
