Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Verne Reed, age 92 of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Waldrop Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Reed passed away on Monday, May 4, 2009, in Kaufman.

Edith Verne Shaw Reed was born on January 3, 1917 in the Fair Play Community of Panola County, Texas to Richmond and Elsie Dobbins Shaw. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1935. Mrs. Reed married Herbert Benton Reed on March 28, 1936. She worked in the Carthage School District as the pastry chef for many years and later worked at Famous Fabrics on the square in Carthage. Mrs. Reed was a member of Central Baptist Church in Carthage. She was preceded in death by her husband on December 26, 1975; one son, Herbert Edmond "Sonny" Reed on August 8, 1999; and one daughter, Nancy Sue Reeves on December 18, 2008.

Mrs. Reed is survived by her son-in-law, Joe Max Reeves of Lake Cherokee; one daughter, Linda Reed of Lufkin; seven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers are Buddy Bankhead, Mark Reeves, Brenton Stamper, Rickey Cobb, Andrew Cobb, Lynn Vincent and Terry Shumate.
