Obituary

Funeral services for Mr. Durwin Akins, age 79 of Beckville, Texas will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bruce Will and Reverend Kim Hagedorn officiating. Interment will follow in Youngblood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Mr. Akins passed away on Tuesday morning, December 12, 2006 in Carthage, Texas.

Durwin Bain Akins was born on June 27, 1927 in Beckville, Texas to Joseph Bain and Elziree Williams Akins. He graduated from Beckville High School and attended B.M.I Business School in Dallas and Coyne Electrical College in Chicago. Mr. Akins married Gettis Marie Brightwell on May 29, 1947 in Beckville. He served his country in the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Akins worked for United Gas Pipeline Company as a superintendent of the Carthage Compressor Station and retired in 1985 after 40 years of service. In retirement, he enjoyed farming and ranching on his family farm in Beckville. He enjoyed raising cattle and loved his dogs, Blue and Bug. He was a member of the Beckville Masonic Lodge # 922 A. F. & A. M. Mr. Akins had lived his lifetime in Beckville and was a member of the Beckville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Adam Carpenter.

Mr. Akins is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gettis Brightwell Akins of Beckville; one son Sammy Bain Akins and wife Rita of Longview; one daughter, Carolyn Akins LeTourneau of Dallas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, S. L. and Tillie Brightwell of Carthage; five grandchildren, Wendi Akins Pierce and husband Mike Pierce, Jr. of Little Rock, Scott Akins of Longview, Billy Carpenter of Richmond, Amy LeTourneau of Beckville, and Matthew LeTourneau of Hallsville.

Serving as pallbearers are Billy Carpenter, Matthew LeTourneau, Scott Akins, Mike Pierce, Jr., Marty Elman, and Larry Williams.
