Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Applegate, age 83 years of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church of Carthage with Dr. Gary Fitzgerald and Reverend Don Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Mrs. Applegate will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning at the funeral home. Visitation with the family will be held from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning in the parlor of the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Applegate passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2006 in Carthage, Texas.
Dorothy Jane Salk Applegate was born on November 18, 1922 in Los Angeles, California to Jack and Pagie Smith Salk. Mrs. Applegate graduated from John C. Marshall High School in Los Angeles. She served her country in the United States Navy (WAVE) during World War II and was honorably discharged. She married W.C. "Bill" Applegate in 1948. Mrs. Applegate worked a brief period as a secretary for President M.P. Baker at Panola College before becoming a full time mother. She loved photography as a hobby and many of her photographs adorn the walls of local businesses in Carthage. Mrs. Applegate was a former member of the Carthage Book Club. She had lived in Carthage since 1948 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Applegate was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on March 21, 2000, and her daughter, Kathy Applegate on July 16, 1989.
Mrs. Applegate is survived by her son, Richard Applegate and wife Dede of Carthage; four first cousins, Julia Cochran and husband Roy of Shreveport; J. Louis Jones and wife Ann of Center, Texas; Dalton Jones and wife Eva Jeanne of center, Texas; and Dolly Talmadge of Houston.
Serving as pallbearers are Jimmy Payne, Lynn Vincent, Scotty Bates, Gene Giles, J.R. Duke, and J. Louis Jones.
