Del Moore, 93, of Carthage, passed away on Tuesday morning, Feb. 27, 2018, in Carthage. Howard Delwin Moore Jr. was born on Dec. 30, 1924, in Naples, TX to the late Howard Delwin Moore Sr. and Thelma Lucille Mathews Moore. He graduated from Naples High School and attended Tarleton State University before joining the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Cabot as a radio technician during WWII. After the war, Del attended the University of Texas at Austin where he completed a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1948. He moved to Carthage later that year and began a 42-year career with the state highway department. Del met Sara Elizabeth "Sally" Davidson while singing in the choir at First Methodist Church in Carthage, and they were married on Oct. 21, 1950. Their life together revolved around music, entertaining, beautifying their home and yard, sports, and above all, family. Del loved computers and audio equipment, photography, amateur radio, sketching and watercolor painting, genealogical research, history, cooking and baking, playing bridge, and reading. In addition to his day job at TXDOT, Del also tuned and repaired pianos for over 35 years and was a licensed professional surveyor. After his retirement, he worked on his golf game, dabbled in the stock market, kept up with the computing industry, and enjoyed traveling. He was also a faithful caregiver to Sally during her 30-year fight with cancer until she preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2014.
He is survived by daughter Margaret Ann (Molly) Reader of Flower Mound; son Richard Lynn Moore and wife Tanya of Beckville; grandchildren, Dakota Moore and Claire and Julia Reader; many beloved nieces and nephews, and special family friend, Dr. Wayne Kyle of Carthage.
