Obituary

Cletus Sylvester Harvey, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Nacogdoches, TX. He was born on November 27, 1932, in Pampa, Texas to the late C.O. "Red" and Ethna Genett Harvey. He was preceded in death by his love Doris Gray Harvey on March 30, 2019, after 43 years of marriage.

Cletus Harvey is survived by his son Brad L. Harvey and wife Belinda of Austin; daughter Susan (Suzi) Gayle Harvey Bruning and husband David of Missouri City; step-son Craig Smith and wife Mary Ann Neely of Austin; grandchildren, Ryan Christopher Bruning, Kathryn (Katy) Ruth Bruning, and Michael Benjamin Bruning; and step-grandchildren Lacey Robinson and Neil Robinson. He was also preceded in death by his step-daughter Christie Smith.

Cletus was a true Texan through and through. He was born in the Panhandle of Texas and his family made the move to the bustling town of Electra during the oil boom of the 40's. After graduating high school and working as a roughneck on oil rigs, Cletus joined the US Army. After army life, he and his first wife and young family eventually made their way down to the Gulf Coast where he managed Phillip's 66 gas stations. In 1974 he met and married his "green-eyed school teacher" Doris and came to settle in his much beloved piney woods of Nacogdoches.

Cletus was quite the story teller…and some of them were even true! His stories were published in the Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel for over 40 years and he was well known within the local community for his humor and wit. He loved researching history (especially that of East Texas) and many of his stories would feature local citizens. Mostly he was blessed by the relationships he formed while he owned Nacogdoches Western World on University Dr. and Cletus' Corner on the downtown square. It was in these businesses that he met so many wonderful people who became lifelong friends. He was a man of unwavering strong moral character who treated everyone with dignity, honor and respect no matter their race, religion or economic status. He had a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege to know him.

Cletus was a man who was so generous in helping anyone in need. In lieu of flowers the family asks that his friends do the same…make a donation to the charity of your choice or "pass it on" and help someone when you see a need and remember Cletus.

In light of Covid 19 and Cletus' wishes, there will be a private graveside service for the family on Monday, Dec. 21st at Bethlehem Cemetery outside of Carthage where Cletus will be laid to rest beside his wife. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Right At Home and Harbor Hospice for the tender care they gave him.
