A funeral service for Claude Mitchel "C.M." Courtney, age 92, of Tatum, TX, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Pine Grove Assembly in Beckville with Bro. Jackie Harris and Mike Courtney, son, officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Youngblood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Courtney passed away on Tuesday night, Jan. 28, 2014, at his home in Tatum.

Claude Mitchel Courtney was born on Oct. 25, 1921, in Beckville, TX, to the late Frank Francis and Dorothy Ann Parker Courtney. Growing up, he attended school in DeBerry. Mr. Courtney proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married his sweetheart and the love of his life, Alice Pauline Singleton, on June 19, 1945, in Carthage and she preceded him in death on May 3, 2010. Mr. Courtney lovingly provided for his family as a master mechanic, truck driver, and his favorite job, which was working in the logging industry, until his retirement. He loved fishing, horses, and spending time with his family. He moved to Tatum in 1955, from DeBerry and was a member of Pine Grove Assembly in Beckville for over 50 years. He was also preceded in death by one son, Billy Courtney; one grandson, Eric Abel; two brothers, Odie and Rusty Courtney; one sister, Margie Scott; and a son-in-law, Bill McIlwain.

Mr. Courtney is survived by three sons, Joe T. Winn and wife Loretta of Groveton, GA, Mike Courtney and wife Tina of Carthage, and Jimmy D. Courtney and wife Anita of Tatum; two daughters, Sharon K. Abel and husband Kelly of Hallsville and Karen McIlwain of Tatum; daughter-in-law, Sally M. Courtney of Beckville; sister-in-law, Edith Singleton of Tyler; brother-in-law, Billy Bob Singleton and wife Shirley of Marshall; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends also survive Mr. Courtney.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and nurses of Heart's Way Hospice, Melinda Qualls, and caretaker, Tracie Odom for the loving care shown to Mr. Courtney.

Serving as pallbearers are Brandon Courtney, Luke Courtney, Kevin Courtney, Drew Courtney, Kevin McIlwain, Devin McIlwain, and Brent Cochran.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are Karlos Courtney, Jerry Courtney, and David Courtney.
