Funeral services for Mr. Charles C. Matthews, age 79, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2010, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Mr. Matthews will lie in state after 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with a visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Matthews passed away on Friday morning, April 2, 2010, in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Charles Carpenter Matthews was born on November 24, 1930, in Beckville, Texas to Samuel Ellis and Bennie Lucille Carpenter Matthews. He graduated from Carthage High School and attended Southern Methodist University and Stephen F. Austin State University. Mr. Matthews served his country in the United States Air Force in Germany and was honorably discharged. He was a local rancher, businessman, and was a longtime director of Shelby Panola Savings and Loan. He enjoyed bird hunting, his cows, the outdoors, and had a keen interest in fire arms. Mr. Matthews lived most of his lifetime in Carthage and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sammy Matthews Brown.
Serving as pallbearers are John W. Conway, David Bush, Billy Bush, Jimmy D. Payne, Vermoyn D. Reeder, Robert Underwood, Richard Ballenger, and Raymond Schieffer.
