Obituary
Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine Keeling, age 92, of the Long Branch Community in Panola County, TX, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage with Rev. Keefe Cropper officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Boynton Cemetery in Long Branch. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Keeling passed away on Wednesday morning, Sept. 21, 2011, in Houston, TX.
Catherine Dent Hughes Keeling was born on Nov. 14, 1918, in Panola County, TX to John Allen and Dorothy "Dolly" Meyers Hughes. Mrs. Keeling attended the Long Branch School and later the New London School where she graduated with the class of 1936. She graduated from University of Houston with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Mrs. Keeling married John Binford Keeling on Dec. 27, 1939, in New London, TX and he preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 2001. She began her career as an educator with Houston I.S.D. and later with Beckville I.S.D. where she worked until her retirement. Mrs. Keeling was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage where she was a member of the Gleaners/Upper Room Sunday School Class. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Linda Beth Keeling who passed away in 1952; four brothers, Allen, Gus, Charles, and John Hughes; and one sister, Bess Osburn.
Mrs. Keeling is survived by two daughters, Norma Scarborough and husband Tommy of Jersey Village, TX and Kay Keeling of St. Petersburg, FL; two grandsons, Justin Scarborough of Denver, CO and Michael Scarborough of Bryan, TX; a sister, Imogene Shamblin of Desoto, TX; and a brother-in-law, Randolph Keeling of Tyler, TX.
Serving as pallbearers are Tommy Scarborough, Michael Scarborough, Brian McLeroy, Jimmy Anderson, and Bob Averitte.
