Bonita McElroy, 87, of Richardson, TX, formerly of Carthage, TX, passed away on Friday night, Oct. 29, 2021, in Richardson. Bonita Carol Peterson was born on March 31, 1934, in Logansport, LA to the late Walter Rudolph Peterson, Sr. and Zeffie Glenn Mangham Peterson. She graduated from Logansport High with the class of 1952. Bonita married Adria Lee McElroy, Sr. She worked as secretary for Bill Applegate and later for Richard Thomas for many years before her retirement. Mrs. McElroy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed volunteering with the ETMC Hospital Auxiliary where she had served as president. She moved to Carthage in 1968, from Athens, TX and she was a member of Central Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Skit Club and the Ball Club. Mrs. McElroy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Betty Nesmith and Barbara English; and brother, Walter Rudolph Peterson, Jr.

She is survived by her children, Adria Lee McElroy, Jr. and wife Peggy of Mineola and Phyllis Carol McElroy of Dallas; brother-in-law, Proby English of New Iberia, LA; and granddaughter, Hannah Kate McElroy of Mineola.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, at Restland Memorial Park near Carthage with Dr. Monty Pierce officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Honorary Pallbearers are Coy McElroy, Everett McElroy, Larry Pennington, John Shivers, Jerry Thompson,  and Brett Thompson.
