Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Luper, age 84 of Carthage, will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Central Baptist Church of Carthage with Dr. Charles Dodson and Reverend Steve Jackson officiating under the direction of Jimerson – Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm on Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Luper passed away on Wednesday morning, April 29, 2009, in Tyler.
Barbara Jo Stevenson Luper was born on October 24, 1924, in Knox City, TX to Lester Hudson and Mary Allen McManners Stevenson. She married Morris Ward Luper on June 9, 1945, in Rowlett, TX. She moved to Carthage in 1969, from Springdale, Arkansas. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Carthage. Mrs. Luper worked at the First State Bank and Trust Company as a secretary and teller for many years. She was a member of the Christian Women's Club of Carthage. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling with Morris, cooking strawberry cake for her grandchildren, and watching hummingbirds in her back yard. On May 10, 1991, Mrs. Luper received a heart transplant at Willis-Knighton-North in Shreveport and she was the longest living transplant recipient from that program. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 3, 2002 and two sisters, Mary Faver and Mildred Burns.
Mrs. Luper is survived by three sons, Calvin Noel Luper and wife Karen of Arp, Alvin Joel Luper and wife Suzanne of Wake Forest, NC and John Frank Luper and wife Laurie of Dallas; one daughter Patricia Jo Luper Harris of Rowlett; one brother Don Edd Stevenson and wife Sharon of Dallas; two sisters Jamie Ibrahim and husband Maher of Lubbock and Betty Quillen and husband Bob of Richardson; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends also survive Mrs. Luper.
Serving as pallbearers are Bill Price, David Anderson, Ted Anderson, Taylor Ross, Kenneth Denniston, and Bill O'Neal.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Brian Ischy, J. T. Luper, Max Luper, Dylan Luper and Sean Harris.
