Obituary

Ann Lummus Johnson was born on Jan. 29, 1938, in Linden, TX to A.D. and Juanita Draper Lummus and she passed away on Saturday night, Jan. 2, 2021, at her home in DeBerry, TX at the age of 82. Ann graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1956, and attended Texas Women's University where she. earned a bachelor's degree in early August 1959. She married Sam Craven Johnson on Aug. 23, 1959, in Denison.

Ann first taught school in College Station while Sam finished his degree at Texas A&M. In 1962, they moved to Buffalo, TX where Ann worked part time as a ranch secretary at Van Winkle Ranch, where Sam was ranch manager. When their youngest child began school, Ann went back to teaching at Buffalo ISD. In 1973, the family moved to DeBerry, where Sam managed a ranch and Ann taught school for Elysian Fields ISD. She later became the school counselor after earning a master's degree in counseling from SFA. It was during this time that Sam and Ann owned and operated a plant nursery.

Ann was a member of Deadwood United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, and Panola County Republican Women. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, traveling with her high school girlfriends, and bird-watching.

Ann is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; her parents, A.D. and Juanita Draper Lummus, and Faye Gee Lummus; and sister, Lori Lummus.  She is survived by her three children, David Johnson of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Jo Ann Neely and husband Joe of Cypress, TX and Mike Johnson and wife Barbara of Carthage; four grandchildren, Courtney Johnson of Carthage, Christopher Johnson and Vanessa Medina of Bryan, TX, Megan Miller and husband Michael of New York City, and Kyle Neely and wife Kathryn of Ft. Collins, CO; five great-grandchildren, Zachary and Annsley of Carthage, Anthony, Jazleen, and Isaac of Bryan; three brothers, Don Lummus and wife Marilyn of North Carolina, Chuck Lummus and wife Shirley of Arizona, and Jerry Lummus and Linda Bailey of Houston; and two sisters, Dorothy Hale and husband Gary, and Judy Jeter and husband David of Denison.  Numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Jason Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the memorial service.
