Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Pauline Singleton Courtney, age 85, of Tatum, TX, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Pine Grove Assembly with Rev. Elbert Jones, Dr. Eugene Langford, Mrs. Paula Lambert, and Bro. Jackie Harris officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Youngblood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Her home going occurred on Monday morning, May 3, 2010, at her home near Tatum.
Alice Pauline Singleton Courtney was born on Dec. 9, 1924, in Marshall, TX to Preston and Jessie D. Hill Singleton. She attended DeBerry school. Mrs. Courtney married Claude Mitchel "C.M." Courtney on June 19, 1945, in Carthage. She lived in Tatum for over 50 years where all of her children graduated from high school. Mrs. Courtney was a faithful member of the Pine Grove Assembly in Beckville for over 45 years and was active until her health deteriorated. She loved to sing, especially gospel songs and was well known for her beautiful alto voice and her ability to play the guitar. She also loved company and "get-togethers" to visit, sing, and eat. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Billy Courtney; one grandson, Eric Abel; two brothers, Virgil and Odell Singleton; one sister, Winnie Mae Langford; and a son-in-law, Bill McIlwain.
Mrs. Courtney is survived by her husband of 65 years, Claude Mitchel "C.M." Courtney of Tatum; three sons, Joe T. Winn and wife Loretta of Augusta, GA, Mike Courtney and wife Tina of Carthage, and Jimmy D. Courtney and wife Anita of Tatum; two daughters, Sharon K. Abel and husband Kelly of Hallsville and Karen McIlwain of Tatum; one brother, Billy Bob Singleton and wife Shirley of Marshall; daughter-in-law, Sally M. Courtney of Beckville; sister-in-law, Edith Singleton of Tyler; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Serving as pallbearers are Mrs. Courtney's grandsons, Devin McIlwain, Kevin McIlwain, Kevin Courtney, Brandon Courtney, Luke Courtney, and Brent Cochran.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Karlos Courtney and Jerry Courtney.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Melinda Qualls and Heart's Way Hospice, a special friend, Mrs. Shirley Lewis with Jordan Health Services, and all of the wonderful members at Pine Grove Assembly for the loving care shown to Mrs. Courtney.
